Gunther gazed through the passenger window of the truck, his weight shifting foot to foot in anticipation of a new adventure.

“Sorry, guy. No doggy playdates today. We’ve got work to do.”

He glanced over as if to say, “I know. Just excited. New trouble on the horizon.”

The deserted industrial park gave way to residential neighborhoods with fall-colored canopies bearing the promise of cooler weather, then finally to open fields interspersed with forests shadowing thinning vegetation.

Her phone dinged with a message when she parked her truck beyond the school property. Leaving the windows down for Gunther, she said, “Stay here, boy. I’ll be back soon.”

She shouldn’t have been surprised at the message displayed.

Damn, it figures Wyatt would track me as well as Casper.
